Here are great tuto­ri­als on build­ing your own soft­ware gui­tar effects with MaxMSP (Tuto­r­ial #1, Tuto­r­ial #2). For those who don’t know MaxMSP is an incar­na­tion of Max, the mul­ti­me­dia devel­op­ment envi­ron­ment. Max was rolled out by Cycling ’74. MSP is a set of mod­ules designed for real-time audio pro­cess­ing, check out the overview here. MaxMSP is a bit pricy for the hob­by­ist but there is a 30 day demo ver­sion avail­able for you to play with. You might find that you like it enough to shell out.
