Yeah, I mourn the loss of Pandora access too. Give The Filter a try.

http://www.thefilter.com/

It's the brainchild of Peter Gabriel, and as far as I know isn't limited to a specific country.

It WAS great but unfortunately I can't use it anymore because I'm not American (copyright rules). I've found Last.fm, but it just gives me music in the same genre, rather than using those describing words for songs to find truly similar music. So instead of finding great music almost instantly I've still got to feel through the stuff I'm not interested in.

That's the most anyone can do: go through the list. From a PR perspective it helps to attract fans if you give them an idea of your sound that is something they can relate to. A framework that will let them classify what they can expect from you. Are you bluesy? Are you discordant? Fast? Heavy?

Pandora radio was good at playing this game because they classified so many elements that make up the signature sound of an artist. It was great for finding music I hadn't discovered but was likely to appeal to me.

I just start naming bands and artists. I'd say, "I don't listen to genres. I listen to artists."

That sounded so wanky. Maybe I won't say it.
